Inflammaging

Chronic Sterile Inflammation / Low-Grade Inflammation of Aging

What It Is

A portmanteau coined by immunologist Claudio Franceschi describing the chronic, low-grade, sterile inflammatory state that accumulates with aging and underlies virtually all age-related diseases — cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, neurodegeneration, cancer, and accelerated skin aging. Driven by accumulation of senescent cells (SASP), gut microbiome dysbiosis, mitochondrial dysfunction releasing DAMPs, and epigenetic derepression of inflammatory genes. Inflammaging is detectable in blood via elevated CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α.

Key Context

In skin: inflammaging manifests as thinning, loss of firmness, increased sensitivity, slower wound healing and impaired barrier function. Anti-inflammaging strategies: omega-3 fatty acids, Mediterranean diet, exercise, adequate sleep, stress management, targeted anti-inflammatory supplements (curcumin, quercetin, resveratrol).
