Non-Comedogenic

Non-Pore-Clogging / Non-Acnegenic

What It Is

A claim that a product or ingredient has been tested or formulated to not clog pores or trigger comedone formation. The term is not regulated by the FDA or EU — any brand can make this claim without required testing. Legitimate non-comedogenic testing uses human skin testing or the comedogenic rating scale. The claim is a useful starting guide for acne-prone skin but should not be taken as absolute — individual skin biology varies and what is non-comedogenic for one person may not be for another.

Key Context

More meaningful than the label claim is looking at the ingredient list: avoid high-comedogenicity ingredients (coconut oil, isopropyl myristate, wheat germ oil, heavy waxes) near the top of the ingredient list if you are acne-prone.
