Buffering Retinol / Retinol Sandwich / Moisturiser Buffering
A method for reducing the irritation associated with retinoids by "sandwiching" the retinoid between two layers of moisturiser: first, apply a thin layer of moisturiser to clean skin; wait 5–10 minutes; apply the retinoid; wait 5–10 minutes; apply a second layer of moisturiser. The buffering moisturiser dilutes the retinoid slightly and forms a physical barrier between retinoid molecules and the outermost skin cells, reducing the rate of absorption and thus the initial irritation response.
Useful for beginners or those with sensitive skin. As the skin acclimates over 4–8 weeks, users can gradually reduce the buffer and eventually apply retinoid to dry, clean skin for maximum potency.
