Skin Cycling

4-Night Skin Cycle / Exfoliate-Retinol-Recover Protocol

What It Is

A structured skincare rotation protocol popularised by dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe in 2022. The standard 4-night cycle: Night 1 — exfoliant (AHA or BHA); Night 2 — retinoid; Nights 3 & 4 — recovery (barrier repair only: ceramides, hyaluronic acid, gentle moisturiser, no actives). The rationale is to space out potentially irritating actives, allow barrier recovery between applications, and avoid the cumulative irritation of using acids and retinoids too frequently.

Key Context

Particularly useful for beginners, sensitive skin types, or anyone who has experienced over-exfoliation or retinoid dermatitis. Can be modified for more experienced users (e.g., 3-night cycle). The recovery nights are not "wasted" — barrier repair is as active as treatment.
